"CHALLENGER 601, INFORMATION!"

"The Challenger 601" has refinements like a more advanced engine and the addition of wing-lets make the Aircraft capable of transoceanic range while maintaining ample cabin space for which its predecessor is known.

Canadair bought the production and marketing rights to the aircraft in 1976 and named it the LearStar 600.

The name was changed to Challenger 600, as the aircraft was designed to challenge Gulfstream’s dominance of the long-range business jet market.

The first production Challenger 600—powered by 7,500-pound-thrust Avco Lycoming ALF 502L engines—flew initially in September 1979.

FAA certification took place in November 1980, and deliveries began in early 1981.

Because the Challenger 600 was underpowered, Canadair soon developed an upgraded version of the aircraft dubbed the 601-1A, equipped with winglets and 8,650-pound-thrust GE CF34-1A engines.

A production model Challenger 601-1A flew for the first time in September 1982, and won FAA certification in March 1983.

Other organizations that flew the 601-1A included Canada’s department of transport (which used the airplane for flight inspection), Canada’s department of national defense, the People’s Republic of China, and Germany’s Luftwaffe—which operated a combination cargo/passenger version and an air ambulance model.

The Challenger 601-3A, which features more powerful 9,220- pounds-thrust (with automatic power reserve) CF34-3A engines, was launched in September 1986.

A key feature of the 601-3A is the Sperry SPZ-8000, which includes dual flight management systems, dual flight guidance computers, dual digital air-data computers, a five-tube EFIS with multifunction display, and four-color digital radar.

The 601-3A also featured a power-assisted passenger door and twin nose-mounted landing lights.

The 601-3A won FAA certification in April 1987, and TAG Aeronautics was the first to take delivery of the new Challenger.

The 601-3A/ER, which first flew in November 1988, included a new conformal fuel tank housed in an extended tail fairing, which increased the range of the airplane to 3,600 nm with IFR reserves.

"The CHALLENGER 601" series has improved immensely over the Challenger 600, with a more reliable flight system and increased maintainability. The 601-1A iteration signifies the use of General Electric CF43-1A engines and drag reducing wing-lets.

"Private Aircraft Charter: Challenger 601"

This aircraft offers non-stop range for virtually any two US cities, as well as the capability to reach most European or South American cities with a single fuel stop and range of 3,600 nm.

"Challenger 601 Cabin"

The cabin is equipped with all of the amenities, including DVD entertainment, satellite communications and a full galley for complete in-flight dining along with a full size lav.

The Challenger 601-3A is a twin turbofan, long range, wide-body business aircraft configured as a cantilever low swept-wing monoplane.

It has retractable tricycle landing gear with two wheels on each unit and a trailing link main gear design.

Aerodynamic refinements, such as the addition of drag-reducing winglets, have been combined with increased fuel capacity to give the -3A the transoceanic range originally envisioned for the Challenger series: the 601-3A is able to carry five passengers 3,430 nm with IFR reserves.

"Charter Flights, Challenger 601"

Automatic power reserve rating is 9,140 lbs. thrust each. Inspection interval on the engines is 6,000 hours.

The Challenger 601-3A is powered by two GE CF34-3A two-spool, high-bypass ratio turbofans rated at 8,650 lbs. of thrust each at takeoff.

The Challenger 601-3A has a maximum occupancy of 19, but typical configurations accommodate 10-12 passengers with a deluxe galley and lavatory, and amenities appropriate for the relatively long leg times expected for an aircraft of this class.

The large fuselage cross section of the Challenger yields a cabin width of over 8 feet, a length of over 28 feet and stand up height of slightly over 6 feet in a cabin that is noted for its low noise levels.

The Challenger series of aircraft are most known for their “wide-body” comfort, with a larger cabin cross section than any other business jet for an extra spacious feel.

With the widest cabin in the large cabin business jet fleet, this 601 is configured for 9-12 passengers.

When the first Challenger 601 was certificated in March 1983, the most notable improvement was the replacement of the 600’s troublesome Lycoming ALF 502 engines with the far more reliable GE CF34 engines.

This made up for most of the 600’s shortcomings, but aerodynamic refinements and other improvements have also contributed to the advancement of the aircraft to a higher level of performance and reliability.

Range has also increased significantly: the original Challenger 600’s disappointingly short legs have been vindicated by the CL-601-3A’s 3,290 nm capability.

Bombardier's Challenger 601 is one of the most popular long range business jets available on the charter market.

The aircraft's fuel efficiency, versatile performance and powerful engines combined with spacious cabin offer passengers an excellent option for long range flights.
