In September 1986 the company announced the Model 55B, offering a new interior, 'glass' cockpit, improved take-off performance and increased range, all of which increased the aircraft's operational flexibility.

One year later, the Model 55C was revealed, fitted with rear under fuselage 'Delta Fins' giving improved directional stability at all speeds and reducing the landing speed, and thus removed the need for a stick puller/pusher.

Later versions are the 55C/ER extended-range version fitted with an extra tank holding 1175kg of fuel in the tail cone.

The Model 55C/LR giving even-longer-range through the installation of a further 322-litre fuel cell behind the standard fuselage tank.

Typical configuration of this version is two crew and seven passengers. Around 150 Model 55 variants had been built by the end of 1990 and the version is to be superseded by the Learjet 60 during 1992.

The Learjet 55 is a 7-passenger small business jet first introduced in the late 1970s.

This nifty jet can handle anything from short hops to medium-haul trips.

Its state-of-the-art navigation suite is among the safest and most reliable of any corporate jet, though the aircraft is also noted for its top speed of 480 mph and its 2,100-mile range.

Aside from the T-tail configuration and the engine nacelles mounted on the rear fuselage, the most distinguishing characteristic of the Learjet 55 is the vertical control surface found on each of its wingtips.

These “winglets” give this variant of the Learjet a somewhat unconventional appearance as well as the popular unofficial name of “Longhorn,” but they actually serve a very important purpose by reducing drag.

As a result, flying becomes much smoother and takeoff distances are reduced. These winglets proved to be so effective that they were also incorporated on all succeeding Learjet variants.

The 7 passengers can easily move around in the Learjet 55’s large and spacious stand-up cabin which can be configured for corporate travel with club seats and folding tables.

There is also 58 cubic feet of storage space for baggages.

Some Learjets have an eight passenger interior featuring a forward single side facing seat followed by a four place club arrangement and an aft three place forward facing divan.

All seating is caramel colored leather complimented by medium brown carpeting and gold colored hardware. The cabinetry is a light colored medium burl veneer.

The attractive interior includes a full bar, lavatory, and both internal and external baggage compartments.

If you’re in the mood to relax and watch a show, in-flight DVD players are available.

The Learjet 55 was first proposed as three separate models; the Lear 54, Lear 55, and the Lear 56, but only the Lear 55 was ever built.

In April of 1979, the first Learjet 55 took flight and production started two years later.

The aircraft evolved from the Lear 55A to the Lear 55B in 1986.

The B model extended range and added a much needed multi-tube EFIS cockpit. There were only 8 B models manufactured and production evolved once again into the Lear 55C.

The cabin of the Learjet holds 50% more cabin volume than its predecessors. Engineers planned ahead by enhancing the size, making the aircraft 5.7 ft. high, 5.9 ft wide and 13.7 ft. long.

The Learjet 55 is an aircraft built for innovation. The midsize cabin aircraft is the perfect combination of the 30-series turbofan engines and the 20-series’ “Longhorn” wing.

The C model added a change to the underside of the aircraft and the addition of the Delta Fins for increased stability. The Lear 55C also improved runway performance for landing.
