The $21 million Praetor 600, based on the $20 million Legacy 500, but carrying extra fuel in auxiliary belly tanks, will be able to fly 3,900 nm with eight passengers, virtually guaranteeing London-to-New-York range with probable winter winds.

The Praetor 500 will seat six to eight seats and will have virtually the same range as the Bombardier Challenger 350. The Praetor 600 has almost as much range as the Legacy 650E, but it will cruise higher, faster and more fuel-efficiently.

The Praetor 500 wing has 950 lb. more fuel capacity than the one fitted to the Legacy 450, thereby boosting the Praetor 500’s range by 350 nm.

The Praetor 500 engine thrust remains unchanged at 6,548 lb. thrust for takeoff, so standard-day takeoff field length increases from 3,907 ft. to 4,263 ft.

The Legacy 450 and 500 will remain in production for buyers not needing the additional range or $1 million uptick in price. Older 2,900-nm-range Legacy 450s may be upgraded to the Praetor 500 configuration for $500,000.

The two new aircraft are Embraer’s newest entrants in the midsize and super-midsize segments. They are not new clean sheet designs, but enhanced versions of existing Legacy models. The Praetor 500 is based on the Legacy 450, and the Praetor 600 on the Legacy 500.

The Praetor 600 will cost $29.9M to buy, and the Praetor 500 $16.9M. A Praetor was a high-level government magistrate in ancient Rome, and Embraer’s head of design says the choice of name is intended to convey the idea that the aircraft is the owner’s ultimate servant.

The primary differentiator between the two new Praetors and the Legacy models they’re based on, comes down to extra range – enabled by more aerodynamically efficient winglets and additional fuel capacity.

Legacy aircraft are mainly used to operate flights within continents, or to connect Europe with the Middle East, or North America to South America.

But the Praetor 600 will be capable of connecting the important transatlantic pathway.

The Praetors’ extra range will put Embraer in a more competitive position in this key market segment, lining up against Bombardier’s Challenger 350 and Textron’s upcoming Cessna Citation Longitude.

With a maximum range of 3,900 nautical miles, the Praetor 600 will be the furthest-flying super-midsize business jet, able to fly nonstop between London and New York with four passengers.

The Praetor 500 will have a maximum range of 3,250 nautical miles. Both aircraft will be powered by a pair of Honeywell HTF 7500E turbofan engines.

Inside the 6-foot tall flat-floor cabin space, Praetor 500 will have room for seven to nine passengers, while the Praetor 600 can seat between eight and 12.

And when it comes to design, Embraer’s team are reaching a new level of detail with the Praetors, including custom-stitched seating; bespoke designer silk and wool carpets; and carbon fibre retractable tables.
