The Beechjet 400 has a very desirable airplane in the charter and fractional markets, where customers can appreciate its speed and good cabin, coupled with reasonable costs.
Operators of the roughly 600 Beechjet 400 and Hawker 400XPs in service say that the aircraft is one of the most versatile, comfortable and economic light jets ever built, a tribute to the detailed design work done by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) in the early 1970s to create its predecessor, the Diamond I.

Deliveries of the Beechjet began in June 1986, with low rate production continuing until that model was replaced by the Model 400A, which was delivered from November 1990.
Following customer feedback Raytheon developed a new luxury standard interior for the Beechjet which was introduced in 1996.
The low-wing, Pratt & Whitney JT15D-powered airplane was renamed the Beechjet 400 when it was acquired in 1985 by Beechcraft, which redesigned the interior, increased fuel capacity, and offered thrust reversers as an option on its new light jet.
The first Beech-assembled airplane rolled out in May 1986.
Since the late 1980s the Beechjet 400 and its successors—the Beechjet 400A, Hawker 400, and Hawker 400XP—have been manufactured in Wichita by Beechcraft, then Raytheon Aircraft, and now Hawker Beechcraft.
After Raytheon Aircraft acquired the Hawker line from British Aerospace, the Beechjet 400 was renamed the Hawker 400, and the manufacturer soon introduced the improved 400XP.
In September 1989 the first flight of the upgraded Beechjet 400A took place. New features included more powerful JT15D-5 engines, Rockwell Collins Pro Line 4 avionics, higher gross weight, improved performance, and a larger cabin.
